That is, the same fundamental management mistakes continue to be made. To cite a few examples; requirements are unclear at the beginning of projects and are not managed during the project, the product is not tested adequately, schedules are misestimated or not tracked in sufficient detail. The contents of this book, together with the underlying IEEE Standards, are dedicated to helping the reader in their work: The continuing quest to produce quality software products in a predictable manner. This book, containing all original material, is based on the proposition that the IEEE Software Engineering Standards capture many of the fundamental 'best practices' of software project management. It is written to assist the reader in applying those standards to their projects and company. To meet this goal, the authors discuss and elaborate the standards that bear on the three key management areas of: Software systems engineering, Processes for developing software products, Planning and control of software project activities. The body of the book is correspondingly organized into three parts. Software Systems Engineering, which argues that software development projects are most successful when developed using a systems level viewpoint. Process Management and Control, which describes the key activities needed to define, support, and manage a project's software development processes. Project Planning and Management completes the book, integrating the elements of cost and schedule estimation and control, risk management, and the role metrics play in performing those tasks.

The time took to come in was very short as well Again great jobThe best practices, predicated upon the view that the common thread is software engineering standards and practices, are presented in three sections: (1)Software Systems Engineering - a critical success factor for any software project. (2) Process Management and Control - what must be done in order to effectively scope, support and manage the development process itself. (3) Project Planning and Management - standard fare, including estimation, risk management, and metrics. Each of these sections contain papers that discuss aspects of the topic area, which include: Software Systems Engineering, Concept of Operations, Software Requirements Specification, Software User Documentation, Software Verification and Validation, Software Life Cycle Process Management, Software Process Improvement, Software Reviews, Software Configuration Management, Software Quality Assurance, Maintenance, Software Engineering Project Management, Software Cost and Schedule, Software Risk Management and Software Metrics. Personally I completely agree with the book's approach (standards and processes are critical to successful development projects).

This difference is the truncation error. The simple explicit scheme for the unsteady heat equation is consistent since the truncation error (right-hand side of Eq. The formal order of accuracy of the scheme is first order in time and second order in space since the leading terms in the truncation error contain the factors Dt and (Dx) 2, respectively.. Review of code and solution verification procedures for computational simulation Article May 2005 J COMPUT PHYS Christopher John Roy Computational simulation can be defined as any computer application which involves the numerical solution to a system of partial differential equations. In this paper, a broad overview is given of verification procedures for computational simulation. The two aspects of verification examined are code verification and solution verification. Code verification is a set of procedures developed to find coding mistakes that affect the numerical discretization. The method of manufactured solutions combined with order of accuracy verification is recommended for code verification, and this procedure is described in detail.

Solution verification is used to estimate the numerical errors that occur in every computational simulation. Both round-off and iterative convergence errors are discussed, and a posteriori methods for estimating the discretization error are examined. Emphasis is placed on discretization error estimation methods based on Richardson extrapolation as they are equally applicable to any numerical method. Additional topics covered include calculating the observed order of accuracy, error bands, and practical aspects of mesh refinement. View Show abstract. Abstract Maintenance is the most expensive phase of the software life-cycle. This is especially true when there is a lack of supporting tools and processes to perform the maintenance activities in a given paradigm, such as component-based soft-ware engineering. This paper presents an approach that aims to assist mainte-nance of component-based systems by means of software configuration manage-ment techniques.

These techniques support different activities of software mainte-nance, from the maintenance request up to implementation and integration. Moreover, some feedback about the relationship of component-based artifacts is provided by applying data mining techniques over configuration management re-positories. Much has been written about causes of project failure and many have provided best practices and critical success factors for effective management projects, yet projects still continue to fail. As a first step to overcome systemic causes of project failure we propose a unified definition of software quality assurance (SQA). We use this definition to develop and present an approach to SQA that focuses on controlling risks and provide a framework for assuring the development and project management life cycles. This paper aims at providing an empirical framework design to examine the improvement in software requirements through negotiation. Besides, it elaborates the relevance of negotiation in requirements elicitation process and its effectiveness. An empirical study method is imposed to design the framework. Patterns for Effective Management of Virtual Projects: Theory and Evidence. Article Full-text available Jan 2006 Deepak Khazanchi Ilze Zigurs The management of virtual projects is fundamentally different from that of traditional projects. Furthermore, the research in this area comes from different reference disciplines and perspec- tives, and a unified view or theory of best practices does not yet exist. Being able to combine perspectives in a seamless way with skills and technology could provide integrative blueprints for best practices in virtual projects. We use the theoretical frame of patterns to propose such a view. We focus on three concepts as the underlying theoretical elements for identifying patterns of effectiveness in virtual project management: (1) coordination, (2) communication, and (3) control. As a first step in the identification of specific patterns, we conducted a series of virtual focus groups with participants from industry who had real experience with virtual projects. The brainstorming data from the focus groups was analyzed to develop an initial set of patterns. The study represents a first step in an iterative and evolutionary process. Este passo deve garantir que todas as atividades necessarias ao projeto sejam consideradas.. Web-based admission system for physical therapy graduate program Article Hien Nguyen Web-based applications are no doubt replacing a paper-based process in most of higher education activities. Web-based applications can help to improve the reliability and to reduce the processing time and cost. In graduate admissions, the applicants are able to apply and retrieve the application status online. All of the application forms, fees, resumes, transcripts, GRE scores, and letters of recommendation are submitted electronically. This project was initiated by Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy (DPT) at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (UWL), in order to assist the admission office to manage the applications. The project objective is to build a web-based system that allows the applicants to submit their applications online. The recommenders for the applicants are also able to submit their recommendation via this system.

Furthermore, the admission officers can manage the applications and export the needed reports. This manuscript is written as a summary of the development process of the web-based application mentioned above. It also includes the challenges and fun that I have encountered during this project. Limitations and possible improvements are also mentioned. Dans cet article, nous nous interessons uniquement aux BP orientees processus. Bohner With the advent of potent network technology, software development has evolved from traditional platform-centric construction to network-centric evolution. This change involves largely the way we reason about systems as evidenced in the introduction of 'network-centric operations (NCO). Unfortunately, it has resulted in conflicting interpretations of how to map NCO concepts to the field of software architecture. In this paper, we capture the core concepts and goals of NCO, investigate the implications of these concepts and goals on software architecture, and identify the operational characteristics that distinguish network- centric software systems from other systems. More importantly, we use architectural design principles to propose an outline for a network-centric architectural style that helps in characterizing network-centric software systems and that provides a means by which their distinguishing operational characteristics can be realized. Seidman There's a generally accepted maxim in the software industry: a well-managed software organization, staffed by qualified software engineering professionals in a mature software engineering environment, can repeatedly deliver software systems that meet their requirements, on time and within budget. But what does it mean to be professionally qualified. The IEEE Computer Society's Certified Software Development Professional program offers a solid path to certification that helps to establish software engineering professionals' credentials. Plans made in this paradigm and adjusted by linear feedback methods cannot cope with the multiple interacting and continuously changing technology and market forces.
