In defense of the authors, they did state that caveat. I have given it 5 stars but I only studied about half of the material in the book, and do not feel qualified to rate the other half, specifically the chapters around heat transfer, downstream equipment, design and integration, computer control, and plant design. Someone with more experience around that might give the prospective buyer a better picture.

Furthermore, the three “optimum” formulations were produced by extrusion film blowing only, since no stable processing conditions could be obtained for the controls. A complete set of sample characterization was performed, including morphological, mechanical, physical, and thermal properties.

The results showed that besides the processing method, the thickness was also controlled by the glycerol and water content, leading to density slightly above unity, with higher values for the optimum materials. The calendered films from the optimum formulations showed overall a higher number of cells and cell density than the controls. Higher elastic moduli and tensile strengths were obtained for the films from the optimum formulations made by either method because of the reinforcing effect of the tannic acid and nanoclays, but this led to lower strain at break. The thermal profiles were similar for all films, with higher stability for the optimum formulations. The results were also explained via chemical interactions between the components as observed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. One of the main challenges in FDM is to understand and relate the impact of printing conditions on part distortion for optimizing the 3D-printing process to achieve good print quality.

Hence, the effect of various printing parameters, particularly print bed temperature, layer bonding, layer thickness and raster pattern, on built-up residual stresses and warpage is simulated in this work, by building a relationship between the crystallisation kinetics, viscoelastic and thermo-mechanical properties of the polymer in relation to changes in temperature during FDM using element activation in COMSOL. To the best of our knowledge, this is a novel approach for quantitative prediction of part distortion in FDM of semi-crystalline polymers under various printing conditions. Based on the simulation results, it is observed that a decrease in layer thickness from 0.5 mm to 0.1 mm results in an 89 drop in warpage and a reduction in residual stress of 24. Applying a line raster pattern reduces warpage and residual stresses by 16 and 36, respectively in comparison with a zigzag raster pattern. Very good agreement is observed between simulation and experimental results for warpage under various printing conditions. The terms of the ExtruOnt ontology provide different types of information related with an extruder, which are reflected in distinct modules that constitute the ontology. Thus, it contains classes and properties for expressing descriptions about components of an extruder, spatial connections, features, and 3D representations of those components, and finally the sensors used to capture indicators about the performance of this type of machine. The ontology development process has been carried out in close collaboration with domain experts. The screw material was AISI 4140, which was treated with flame hardening to obtain 55 HRC hardness. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied to characterize the quality of fiber impregnation. SEM characterized a good bonding performance between carbon fiber and the matrix. Multilayer membranes were prepared using the three-stage Melt-Extrusion, Annealing and Uniaxial Stretching (MEAUS) process. A synergistic effect was observed in the filled samples due to the generation of pores after the stretching-induced lamellae separation and the debonding of mineral fillers from the polymeric matrix. Talc showed a higher efficiency to create porous surfaces when compared to calcium carbonate. Owing to this feature, complete emptying of the material from the extruder is possible, thus reducing the wastage of product during the manufacturing process. Prime importance should be given to study the formulation as well as process parameters to meet requirements. By modifying the equipment design and varying a few processing conditions, a myriad of different dosage forms for various applications can be developed. In-depth pre-formulation research is required for the rational selection of an active pharmaceutical ingredient, carrier, and additives for the smooth and continuous functioning of the HME process to achieve the desired product. This review channels to a holistic perspective of several equipment components, processing requirements, materials used in HME, and various drug delivery systems utilizing HME in recent years. It gives a comprehensive treatise on several novel opportunities and innovations such as three-dimensional printed dosage forms, abuse-deterrent formulations, co-extrusion, chronotherapeutic drug delivery, co-crystals, nanotechnology, semi-solids, twin-screw granulation, and miscellaneous applications. The progress described herein may also flourish the drug delivery scenario in the veterinary clinics by employing HME technology, which is briefly discussed in this review for the first time.

The article also highlights a brief insight into the global status of the pharmaceutical HME market during the period between 2016 and 2024.
