Top Five Cargo Bikes without Buckets

Seeing as that I did the post on cargo bikes with buckets, I’m doing the one without the large buckets or with a reduced space to carry items smaller than, say, children. There is an odd array of bikes and I am impressed with the initiative to promote a bike culture.

This list is for you if you are looking for an option that doesn’t have a large box or bucket on it. I’ve specifically included brands that have modified the frame itself to provide a base for cargo or can accommodate panniers on a longer frame.

So here’s the list, in alphabetical order:

Bullitt by Larry vs Harry – This is a popular brand based in Copenhagen, land of the urban biker. The brand touts itself as a fast cargo bike and with interesting design details like the image of Che Guevara, Buster Keaton and Chuck Berry (depending on the model) on different parts of the bike, you are sure to dig it. The different models have different components on them, ranging from XT Deore to Truvativ crankshafts and even hydraulic brakes. This bike is an eclectic mix, regardless of what model you buy.

CETMA – These cargo bikes have the unique feature of being bi-partible, meaning they can be disassembled at a center point, right behind the cargo bed, to be easily loaded into a car. They come in two sizes: Largo (large) and Margo (mini). They are built in Venice, California and have a box option as well.

Trek – This big name brand makes an interesting longtail cargo bike. There are two models: the Transport and the Transport+. You get a double-legged kickstand, super durable, ballistic nylon bags to last the long haul, front and rear cargo racks and 26 inch wheels. The interesting thing is that the Transport+ is an ebike and can be recharged in any standard outlet.

Xtracycle – This is an interesting company because there is an option (the FreeRadical) that converts your regular bike into a cargo bike by attaching an extension. The other option is a foldie cargo bike called the Cargo Joe, which is an extension on a Tern foldie bike. Both options have a sort of ironing board-looking rack where cargo, children or people can go astride.

Yuba – Yuba offers a fun variety of colorful bikes with regular and ebike versions. There is the Boda Boda and the Mundo, with each of their varying models within the two families. There is a tech that caught my attention that the Mundo NuVinci has is the NuVinci N360. It’s what is called a continuously variable planetary drivetrain and it works with what is basically gear shifting in the hub of the rear wheel. It has a few color options, depending on which model you buy, running black, blue, yellow, orange, white and green.
